Folk music has been with us forever...in every country of the world. It is the musical expression of many people; it takes us back to our roots and allows us to participate in that rich tradition.
When times are hard and people are suffering, folk music is the voice of our conscience to awaken compassion and understanding. It moves us, makes us laugh, cry and best of all, brings us together.
Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, the Weavers, Peter Paul and Mary, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan were major influences for many of us. Now new voices continue to inspire us, artists like Lucy Kaplansky, Eliza Gilkyson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, James Talley, Alice Stuart, Chuck Brodsky and Chris Smither to name a few .
SLOfolks brings us a variety of voices and instruments... artists like Rahim AlHaj from Baghdad, who uses his music to communicate compassion, love and peace. "The responsibility of the listener is to understand the message. This message is the secret of life." Rahim AlHaj

| SLOFOLKS CONCERTS 2008 |
Pierre Bensusan completed his 40 day tour at Castoro Cellars to a SOLD OUT crowd. He played a longer than usual second set and treated us to a beautiful piece from his Intuite CD, after a couple of standing ovations. In Steve Vai's words: ""Listening to Pierre's music is rejuvenating. Beside his extraordinary touch and tone, the notes and melody appeal directly to the tender side of our human nature."
We are pleased to let you know that Pierre Bensusan just won the 2008

| BAKA BEYOND |
| AFRICAN RHYTHM - CELTIC SOUL
July 19 - Castoro Cellars, 7PM - $22
Doors open at 6:00 - Catered dinner available at extra charge by 10th Street Grill.
Baka Beyond, the band renowed for its intoxicating brew of Celtic, Gaelic and West African music, has established a worldwide reputation over the decade or more since it released its influential Spirit of the Forest album.
Band members. from Brittany, Cameroon, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Ghana as well as Britain, blend rhythms and melodies of Africa with Celtic traditions old and new.
|
 |
|
| Martin Cradick,
guitarist and founder member of Baka Beyond says of his latest album Rhythm Tree : "...it is the culmination of over 10 years of work for me. It's where the music of the Baka and of Baka Beyond comes back together."
Musicians from 6 countries in the Celtic fringes of Europe and the West coast of Africa join together to play the most originallive world fusion sound around. The spirit of the music lives in the rhythm.
All Baka Beyond's rhythms are played by human beings not machines.
"It was the amazing bird-like singing or yelli that first attracted me," says Su Hart, Baka Beyond's lead singer. "The women get together before the dawn to sing, enchant the animals of the forest and ensure that the men's hunting will be successful. Song and dance are used by the Baka for healing, for rituals, for keeping the community together and also for pure fun! We try to do the same in Baka Beyond."
The Baka Pygmies of Cameroon are an indigenous people from southeast Cameroon, and their musicality, creativity and culture are a constant reference point for the band, providing the perfect context in which to bring music from different cultures together.
Over the yars of visiting and making music with the Baka in Africa, Baka Beyond has ensured that it gives back to the source of its inspiration.
Royalty payments have been channelled to the Baka through the charity Global Music Exchange, and have recently funded the building of a large timber-framed Music House in the rainforest of Cameroon. the Music House was constructed entirely from one giant tree and is the first of its kind to be built and owned by an indigenous community.
The Baka are renowned throughout Africa as masters of dance, and anyone who has witnessed Baka Beyond live will testify to the amazing levels of energy and passion which have enthused audiences across Europe and the USA in recent years.
On stage the band presents a tight spectacle of music, song and dance that overflows with fun and exuberance
Trade along the eastern shores of the Atlantic has been going on since pre-history, so maybe, it isn't surprising that Celtic and Gaelic songs fit so well with West African rhythms.

| SLIGO RAGS ON THE VILLAGE GREEN |
August 10th - 1 to 3pm = Bandstand on the Village Green, Branch St, Arroyo Grande - Free -
STEVE KEY will open for SLIGO RAGS
Arroyo Grande Village Summer Concert Series
SLOfolks welcomesSligo Rags,a Celtic-oriented ensemble comprise of accomplished and versatile musicians.Their repertoire is original, traditional with cover tunes.
Sligo Rags has been a favorite of SLOfolks and will be playing on the SLOfolks stage at the Arroyo Grande Summer Concert Series.
Sligo Rags is a dynamic ensemble that performs Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. The band is a two-time winner of the Orange County Music Award for Best Folk Band. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the California Celtic music scene by storm. Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After", currently garnering international airplay, was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine. Says the San Diego Troubadour, "This band can light up an atmosphere as dim as the Guinness stout you just ordered at the bar...Sligo Rags really knows their Celtic music." Don't be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz and swing manage to sneak their way into the act as well. Bob Stane, the legendary founder of The Icehouse and The Coffee Gallery Backstage says of Sligo Rags, "this is a money back, no questions asked if you are not thrilled act. Bring friends. Dynamic, up tempo, multi-talented. A fusion that just crackles." The group’s name is a tribute to the Celtic anthem "The Irish Rover," whose third verse begins "We had one million bags of the best Sligo Rags."

Friday, September 12, Coalesce Bookstore, 7pm - $15
"William Pint and Felicia Dale rank among North America's most exciting interpreters of music based in the traditions of the British Isles and France... unconventional but spine-tingling... unique and mesmerizing "
Dirty Linen
That's right, maritime music, nautical music - the music of the sea. Whether they be contemporary songs with the sea as a theme or shanties, (or chanties, if you prefer) the traditional work songs sung aboard the tall ships to organize the labor of the crew. Those crews were English, Irish, German, French, from the West Indies, The United States and other sea going nations, but the music itself was inspired by the oceans that link all these places together and cover two thirds of our planet. We take all of this as a source of inspiration for our music - giving it our own spin with guitar, hurdy-gurdy, mandolin and other exotic sounds. The result is an unusually energetic and exciting approach to folk music.
